A short drive from the bright lights of Cape Town and surrounded by statuesque mountains of the Cape Winelands and you will find beautiful Wellington – a town filled with fresh air, open space and surrounded by nature’s goodness.

Seen as the ‘active capital’ of the Cape Winelands together with neighbouring town, Paarl, there are a variety of walking and hiking trails with various levels of difficulty to explore in and around Wellington.

This includes the Doolhof River Walk, Bains Kloof trails, TweedeTol trails, Limietberg’s trails and Welvanpas Hiking Trail.

The Limietberg Trails consist of the eight-kilometre Rockhopper Trail and the nine kilometre Happy Valley Trail. Other well-known trails are the seven-kilometre Horse Shoe Trail and the ever popular Wellington Wine Walks which takes visitors through vineyards, olive orchards, fields of buchu and vine-cutting plantations. Guests overnight in guest houses on historic Huguenot farms.

The Welvanpas 7,5km hiking trail makes a loop and takes you along the Kromme River and features a waterfall and lookout points with beautiful views.

Explore the vineyards and indigenous fynbos area on horseback. Fynbos Horse trails, operating from Diemersfontein, offers rides through the wine farms. Short trails as well as one-to-three-day trails are all included in these packages.

Try your hand at fly-fishing in the Witte River on Bains Kloof and for those who prefer a bat, racket or club, Wellington boasts a nine-hole golf course and bowls, tennis and squash facilities.

The Wild Boar MTB Trails start and finish at Val du Charron Wine & Leisure Estate. There are six routes catering to single track lovers and those who prefer open gravel roads or just a ride around vineyards.

Wildlife experiences are Bontebok Ridge for a nature drive, bird watching and sundowners as well as Bartholomeus Klip Renosterveld Reserve outside Hermon and Rooshoek Farm.

For adventure lovers Skydive Two Oceans offers tandem skydiving with views of the surrounding winelands.
