Ikhwezi
Ikhwezi means "morning star" in Xhosa. We are a Non Governmental Organization situated in the picturesque town of Paarl. Our primary aims are to assist in the following areas of community upliftment and support:
* Socio-economic development
* Empowerment facilitation
* Life skills training
* HIV / AIDS support
* Job creation
The main thrust of the organization is to act as a catalyst in the empowerment of people, especially disadvantaged women and children. This is done by presenting and conducting relevant training programmes that will eventually bring about a paradigm shift in the individual. We concentrate on their own abilities and inherent skills, building and honing them so that they can utilize these skills to provide for themselves and become self-sufficient. As Ikhwezi is community-based, it is thus community-driven and engages itself actively in the development and upliftment of its constituents.
The Centre has made a big impact on the broader community which it aims to serve. There are tangible proof that individuals are beginning to experience a sense of self-worth, financial independence and better prospects for bargaining and showcasing their acquired skills on the open market. The work and philosophy of Ikhwezi over the last few years were geared to achieve exactly this.
It is obvious that the ripple effect of individuals providing a meal for their families, and especially their extended families, is enormous. More often just one person earning some sort of income can provide a meal for up to ten people. A normal household includes grandparents, sisters and brothers as well as their own children!
The ultimate aim is to strengthen our projects by building capacity, increasing wages and creating more jobs.
