World-renowned wines are cultivated in the Cape Winelands, at the heart of which lies Wellington that boasts some of the best wine-producers in South Africa. Apart from award-winning wines, the region also boasts craft beer, brandy, whisky and gin producers.
Proclaimed “Top Wine Area” at the exclusive 2010 and 2016 South African Terroir Awards, Wellington wines and spirits continue to garner awards in prestigious competitions, both nationally and internationally.

Wellington is literally the “cradle of the contemporary South African wine industry”, supplying up to 85% of the country’s vine cuttings, colloquially known as “stokkies”. Once better known for its vital role in propagating and supplying this grafted, phylloxera-resistant rootstock, Wellington has emerged as an acclaimed, trendsetting player on the South African wine scene, and a notable international wine tourism destination in its own right.

One of the youngest wine districts, it comprises a 15-member wine route, has operated independently from Paarl Wine Route since 2012 and is in the process of defining its terroir-based wards.

The 15 wine producers are members of the Mutual & Federal Agri Wellington Wine Route and offer tasting room facilities and cellar tours.

The wine route boasts one major producer-cellar, family-owned wine estates, a sprinkling of boutique wineries and four potstill brandy and spirits producers.

The compact Wine Route, with its dense concentration of historic wine farms and estates, covers extraordinary diverse terrain, stretching from the Berg River to the Swartland wheat fields and into the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains.

Annually in the month of August the finest fruits of  the winemakers’ labour, selected for quality through blind-tastings by a panel of experts, are unveiled at the “Mutual & Federal Quest for the Best Top Ten Wines Competition” awards function.
