Welbedacht is also home to the Burger family, surely one of the country’s most recognised sporting names. Schalk Sr was a formidable Springbok rugby player back in his day. His son Schalk Jr has followed in his dad’s size 14 footsteps representing his country and being selected as the 2004 International Rugby Player of the Year. Second son, Tiaan, has hung up his provincial rugby boots and now heads up the cellar’s marketing operations. Daughter René is herself a chip off the old block, having gained representative colours for netball.

As an ode to the role terroir plays in wine making and the fine old game of cricket, we built the Welbedacht Cricket Oval on our farm and nestled it into the same terroir as the vineyards that produce our flagship and award winning wine ‘Cricket Pitch’.
Recent Awards:
Their very popular and gregarious wine, Meerkat Sun Angel, received the award at the Wine of the Month Club for the Best Wine of the year in the category for Off Dry/Semi-Sweet/Sweet Wines. At the Michelangelo International Wine Awards their exciting newly released Welbedacht Estate Wine Sauvignon Blanc 2010 received Silver medal and their well known flagship red, Welbedacht Cricket Pitch, received a Gold medal.
To make it even better, at the South African Airways Wine Awards the panel have selected the Welbedacht Wine Estate Chardonnay 2008 on Premium Class and the Welbedacht Wine Estate Chardonnay 2010 listed as the 187 ml wine for the Economy class on all local and International SAA flights.
This weekend the Welbedacht Merlot 2007 has got an gold medal as well as in the museum class the Welbedacht Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2005 also got an gold medal. Also with Welbedacht Wine Estate Pinotage 2008 getting an ABSA Top Ten Award. And the Welbedacht Hat Trick being named the Top South African Red Blend at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
