Welcome to Wellington

THE WELLINGTON WINE & BRANDY ROUTE

The fact that the majority of South Africa's vine-cutting nurseries (better known as "stokkieskwekerye") are found in the Wellington area, is due to the excellent soils and climate of the region.

The Wellington wine and brandy route is small and compact and the cellars within easy driving distance of each other. Only 45 minutes from Cape Town, the area is known as the heart of the Boland.

Members of this route are all open to the public, some only by appointment, and will welcome wine lovers to come and taste their products in a friendly and informal atmosphere.

Make personal acquaintance with the winemakers and learn more about their wines which have achieved many medals on both national and international wine shows.

We cordially invite you to taste the Boland hospitality at our wineries where quality of life is restored in one visit! Therefore, after a visit to our Wine Route you will admit, like so many others, that you have been truly conquered.

Warm Regards,
The Wellington Wine Route Committee

DIEMERSFONTEIN

Diemersfontein is known for its beauty, informal elegance, and grace - an idyllic country destination only 45 minutes' drive from Cape Town and is situated near the Cape's famous Wine Routes. We warmly invite you to share with us the tranquil spirit of Diemersfontein - whether you are conferencing here, marrying here, staying for a few days of leisure (or even permanently) - or taking some of it home in a bottle!

Wamakersvallei Winery. The history of Wamakersvallei Wine cellar dates back to 1941, when a group of grape-growers in the area founded this central cellar for the pressing of their grapes. Each wine in this range tells a proud story of specially selected grapes and meticulous wine-making methods. You can taste the rewards in every bottle.

Klein Optenhorst. Klein Optenhorst has a high density planting of Pinot Noir (3000 vines). No tractor can be used - all cultivation between vines and rows is by hand, as is spraying for disease control. The Pinot Noir was planted in 1990 using Burgundy clones 113 and 117 (one of first vineyards planted in SA using this superior material)

Bovlei Winery. Founded in 1907, Bovlei is the second oldest co-operative winery in South Africa. The spectacular view from the tasting center of the Hawequa Mountain range will convince you why this is a visit not to be missed.
