Hiking Trails

High above Wellington in the Limietberg Nature Reserve there are 5 different hiking trails through indigenous Cape Fynbos and stunning scenery. There are also a number of walks and picnic places in the mountains and some of the most exquisite wildflowers can be seen at certain times of the year. Permits from Wellington Tourism. Maps for self-guided walks on Upland Organic Estate can be obtained from Edmund Oettle during the Wine Harvest Festival.

Game Viewing

The Renosterveld Conservancy is a rare opportunity to appreciate wildlife in its indigenous habitat - bontebok, eland, springbok, wildebeest, hartebeest and wild pig. Learn about the Quagga Breeding Programme and see excellent examples of the biodiversity of fauna and flora as well as many species of bird, including the African Fish Eagle.

Scenic Drives

Bain's Kloof Pass, one of the most picturesque and magnificently constructed passes in the world, is a National Monument. Completed in 1853, this pass was designed and built by renowned engineer Andrew Geddes Bain. More historical information and literature on Bain's Kloof Pass, collected by the Friends of Bains Kloof, is available at Wellington Tourism and at the Wellington Museum, including a brochure on A Self Guided Tour of Bain's Kloof.

Local Gardens

The green fingers and inspiration of Wellington residents have resulted in some superb award winning gardens which hold open days from time to time, and may be visited by arrangement. Klein Optenhorst is throwing open its gates to visitors during the Wine Harvest Festival

Mountain bike trail

There is an exciting mountain bike trail which runs past five guest facilities in the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains offering spectacular views over the Berg River Valley. During September the Wellington Wine Route, in conjunction with Diemersfontein, hosts a Gravel Travel Mountain Bike event which is considered one of the best in the Western Cape

Horse Wine trails: Winetrails

Do you love the outdoors, scenery, fynbos and fine wine? Do you enjoy "four hoof drive"? Then combine it all on one of our wine horse trails. For anything from two hours to three days, we can delight you in the best of the Cape Winelands: from horseback!

Wellington Wine Walk

Walk the three day/three night trail in the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains. The Wine Walk takes you through the historic Daljosaphat, Blouvlei and Bovlei valleys and through fynbos, vineyards, olive groves, fields of buchu and vine cutting plantations. Hikers stay in comfortable guest houses (dinner, bed and breakfast) en route and luggage is transported for you.

Historical Walk

At first glance you might miss the charm of this old Boland town, but take some time to discover its hidden treasures. The best way to explore the town is on foot. Take a self guided tour through Wellington that will take approximately 1-2 hours. You will walk along leafy avenues past beautiful examples of Cape and Victorian architecture, the museum, our parks and gardens, the grand college buildings, the deli and a host of interesting galleries and shops. A self-guide map and leaflet is available from the Wellington Tourism Office.
